Modal verbs tell us if an action is:

Possible or impossible – can/can’t

Compulsory – must/have to

Forbidden – mustn’t/can’t

Permitted/optional – can/don’t have to

A good/bad idea – should/shouldn’t

A moral obligation – should/shouldn’t/ought/oughtn’t

Certain future – will/won’t/shall/shan’t

Uncertain future – could/may/might
