Unit 2 Lesson 3:
Solving Problems w/ Standard Form

3

Goal:

Students are going to solve real world problems involving equations presented in standard form.

4

Procedures:

1) Use what you know about standard form, and how to find its intercepts to make sense of real world situations.

Suppose: You have $60 to spend on halloween candy(x) and decorations(y).
Equation: 5x + 3y = 60
Graph the equation, and interpret the results.

Example 1:

Example 2:

Suppose: You have 30 pallets of emergency supplies to deliver for hurricane relief. You have box trucks and U-haul vans available, the box trucks can haul 6 pallets, and the vans can haul 3 pallets.
Equation: 6x + 3y = 30
Interpret the options available for transporting supplies.

Road Trippin'

You and two friends are planning a road trip between two cities, and you have a budget for fuel and snacks. Your goal is to optimize the trip on a $600 budget, and part of the planning involves mapping out where to go and how often to eat. Be realistic, assume gas costs $3 a gallon (w/ 25mpg) and you spend an average of $30 per meal. So the trip could be modeled by 3x + 30y = 600.
Where would you go?
Prove that it could be done within your budget, using what you have learned about standard form.
