Saber and conocer both mean "to know", but they are not interchangeable.
Use saber when you say you know a fact, or you know how to do something.
Use conocer when you want to say you know a person, a place, or about a subject.

In the preterit, they slightly change meanings: saber = found out
conocer = met or was introduced to
