History of Gamification

  • Gamification was first introduced in 2002 by game designer Nick Pelling. His focus however was not on the classroom but on how businesses could use gamification to engage their customers and clients.

  • Educators eventually took the same concept and brought it to the classroom connecting it to BF Skinner operant conditioning.

​Many think gamification is simply playing games to replace instruction to make it more exciting for students. However gamification is more of a structure used to enhance students experiences in the classroom than simply playing games.
