This TEXT STRUCTURE WORKSTATION is a great way to reinforce the components of the different

expository text structures. This kit contains 5 text structure posters, 4 different text structure

graphic organizers (all with different quantities of pre-filled information, depending on how much

you want your students to be actively taking notes, or for-differentiation purposes), and task cards

and recording sheets for SIX different workstation activities, though each activity can be used with

a whole group or small reinforcement group, as well.

•Print out the workstation task cards, posters, and text cards on card stock and laminate if
preferred.

•Find a few short expository texts or reading passages with different structures to expand your
workstation activities beyond the included text cards.

•Make copies of recording sheets for each student, or enough for a workstation.

In 1884, when he was five years old,
Albert Einstein’s father gave him a
compass. This gift probably began
his lifelong interest in the natural
world. He first started taking music
lessons at age six, and he learned
how to play the violin. Later, he
said he couldn’t imagine his life
without music.

During the 1930s, African Americans were

not allowed to apply for many military jobs.
They could not be pilots. In the early 1940s,
war was starting, and the U.S. needed more
pilots. Because of this, African American
leaders convinced the government that
blacks would be excellent airmen, and

congress changed one part of the law. It
allowed one unit of blacks to train as pilots.
They became the Tuskegee Airmen.

What caused a ship as large as the Titanic to

sink and cause the deaths of so many people?

Around midnight on April 14, 1912, the

Titanic hit an enormous iceberg, the effect

of which was a wide hole in the ship’s side.

People rushed to the lifeboats, but there

weren’t enough boats to save everyone.

Therefore, many people were still on board

when the ship sank a few hours later.

Electric and gasoline cars are similar in

many ways. People drive them on the same

roads. Both types of cars carry passengers

and get people where they need to go. Also,

they both need fuel to run. However, electric

cars need to be plugged in to an outlet to

charge up, and gasoline powered cars need

their tanks to be filled with gasoline to run.

A storm forms over the Atlantic Ocean. As it

moves westward, the waters below the storm

become warmer, causing the storm to

strengthen. The winds begin to spin in a

circular formation and become faster and

faster, reaching a speed of 74 miles per hour.

As a result, the storm has now become a

hurricane.

Alaska is a place of considerable beauty.

Travelers can see the majestic beauty of

snow-covered mountains and enormous

glaciers. They may see a beluga whale

swimming in icy waters and hear its sweet

song. On some nights, brilliant splashes of

blue, purple and red appear in the sky. This

event is called the northern lights.

Starting in the 1500s, Mexico was ruled by

Spain. Many Mexicans wanted to be free from

Spanish rule. On the night of September 15,

1810, a leader named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla

rang the church bell and cried to the people

that Mexico must be free. This event led to a

war that lasted until 1821, when Mexico

became an independent nation.

When the first Olympics were held almost
3,000 years ago, it was an all-male event.

Women were not even allowed to watch the
competitions. The games, held every four
years, consisted only of footraces, and
winners were awarded laurel wreaths. Today
both women and men are allowed to compete

in many different events. Instead of laurel
wreaths, winners are now awarded gold,
silver, and bronze medals.

There are nearly 5,000 kinds of frogs in the

world. Some are very small. The Cuban Tree

frog is one of the worlds smallest frog. It only

grows to be half an inch long. Cuban Tree

frogs are nocturnal animals. They rest during

the day, hidden in trees, and hunt at night.

Their diet includes insects, small birds,

snakes and lizards, and even other small

frogs!

There are four phases in the life cycle of the

butterfly. First, the mother lays the egg. When

the egg hatches, then second stage begins, which

is the caterpillar, or larva, stage. During this

stage, the caterpillar eats and eats, growing out of

its skin many times. After that is the third stage,

the chrysalis, or pupa, stage. During this stage,

the caterpillar begins to change. Finally, the

chrysalis turns into a butterfly, which is the

fourth and final stage.

Dogs and cats both make great household pets.

Both can be friendly companions for their

owners. However, they require different

levels of caring. Dogs need to be walked

regularly. Cats, on the other hand, get all the

exercise they need all on their own.

The population of Houston is growing at a

tremendous rate. For this reason, there is a

need for more housing in the area. Because of

this, the number of homes being built in the

city has doubled in the last ten years. The

growth in population has also increased the

demand for new and improved roads to

accommodate the increase of cars and drivers.

Cubana es la rana más pequeña del mundo.

Sólo llega a medir una media pulgada. La Ranas

de Árbol Cubana son animales nocturnos.

Descansan durante el día escondidos en los

árboles, y cazan por la noche. Su dieta incluye

insectos, pequeños pájaros, serpientes y

lagartos, e incluso ¡otras pequeñas ranas!

Hay cuatro fases en el ciclo de vida de la
mariposa. Primero, la mamá pone el huevo.
Entonces, cuando el huevo se rompe, comienza
la segunda etapa, la oruga o larva. Durante

esta etapa la oruga come y come, creciendo
fuera de su piel muchas veces. Después es la
tercera etapa, la crisálida o pupa. Finalmente,
la crisálida se convierte en una mariposa, que
es la cuarta y última etapa.

Los gatos y perros son buenas mascotas. Los

dos pueden ser compañeros amables para sus

dueños. Sin embargo, los dos requieren

diferentes niveles de cuidado. Los perros

necesitan ser caminados regularmente. Los

gatos, por otro lado, tienen todo el ejercicio

que necesitan por su cuenta.

La población de Houston está creciendo

rápidamente. Por esta razón, hay una gran

necesidad de más viviendas, y resulta que el

número de casas construidas se ha doblado en

los últimos diez años. El crecimiento de la

población también ha aumentado la demanda

de nuevas y mejoradas carreteras para

adaptarse al aumento de los coches y los

conductores.
