Vocab
Electric current: The flow of charged particles.
Electrical circuit: a path that an electric current can flow around.
Battery: A device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy
5
In today's lesson we will:
Build simple ciruits.
Draw and interpret circuit diagrams.
6
What are three items required for an electric circuit?
Power source
2. Conductive material (wire)
3. Load

Video:
Powering circuits with Batteries
As you watch the video, note that the way the batteries were arranged in the circuit in the video changed how they affected the load. In this case, the load was a light bulb.
When the batteries were arranged end to end, they caused the light to be brighter. However, the batteries ran out of power in a short amount of time.
When the batteries were arranged next to each other, the light was less bright. However, the batteries provided power for a longer time.

Multiple Choice
Examine the way the batteries are arranged in the flashlight in the diagram below. Which statement best explains how the batteries will perform in the flashlight?
Dim light for a short time
Bright light for a long time
Bright light for a short time
Dim light for a long time
9
Parellel circuits have multiple paths for the electricity to flow.
Parellel circuit
An electrical circuit in which every component is connected in a single path.
Series circuit
There are two main types of circuits.
10
Consider the switch in the diagram to the right.
When the switch is on, it connects the circuit. Electricity flows around the circuit, and the loads, or light bulbs, will turn on.
When the switch is off, the circuit breaks. Electricity can no longer flow around the circuit, so the light bulbs turn off.
A switch physically connects and disconnects the conductive material within a circuit.
11
Multiple Choice
In the circuit shown below, the copper bar to the rear of the circuit is a switch. What will happen if Jeffrey raises the bar so it no longer touches the connector on the right?
The bulbs will produce more light
The right light bulb will turn off, buth the left bulb will stay lit
Both bulbs will stop producing light
The bulbs will dim slowly over time
