Inferencing is About Reading Between the Lines

Authors rarely state things clearly for readers. We need to be able to investigate and make inferences--read between the lines--to determine the central ideas of a text.

When we infer, we can look and think about these things:

  • Details-Explicit and Implicit

  • Tone of the Author

  • Quotes

  • Figurative Language

  • Our knowledge of the Subject
