What do you think of when you hear the phrase static electricity?
3
4
Electricity runs on atoms….specifically ELECTRONS.
The atom is made up of the following
components:
➔
Protons with a POSITIVE charge
◆p+
➔
Electrons with a NEGATIVE charge
◆E-
➔
Neutrons with a NEUTRAL charge
◆N0
Positive charges ATTRACT negative charges
Positive charges REPEL positive charges
Negative charges REPEL negative charges
Electrons
Protons
Neutrons

Charges
When a surface/item has a charge, it has MORE electrons
(resulting in a negative charge) or FEWER electrons
(resulting in a positive charge.
When a surface/item is neutral, the number of electrons is
EQUAL to the number of protons.
6
What creates static?
It is the accumulation of EXCESS ELECTRICAL ENERGY on
an object that creates static electricity.
➢
Conservation of charge--charges cannot be CREATED OR
DESTROYED only transferred
➢
When charges transfer from one object to another, this results
in an ELECTRICAL SHOCK!!!

Match
Match the following
Atom part with a positive charge
Atom part with a negative charge
Atom part with a neutral charge
Proton
Electron
Neutral
Proton
Electron
Neutral
9
How are electrons charged?
1.
CHARGING BY CONDUCTION--Occurs when an object is charged by
TOUCHING it with another object which already has a charge.
10
How are electrons charged?
2. CHARGING BY FRICTION--when two _________________ objects are rubbed
against each other. One object may pull electrons away from the other, creating one
object with a positive charge and one with a negative charge.
11
How are electrons charged?
3. CHARGING BY INDUCTION--rearrangement of electrons on a neutral object
by a nearby charged object.
12
Open Ended
What do all three types of charging methods have in common?
13
Conductors & Insulators
Conductors: ALLOW ELECTRONS TO
MOVE EASILY
➔
Metals are GOOD conductors
➔
Plastice, wood, rubber glass are
POOR conductors
Insulators: KEEP ELECTRONS FROM
MOVING EASILY.
➔
Plastic, wood, rubber, glass are
GOOD insulators
➔
Metals are POOR insulators
14
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is a conductor?
Glass
Steel rod
Wood
Cotton fabric
15
Drag and Drop
16
WHY????
On your OUTPUT page, write FIVE
sentences where you give a
SPECIFIC example of a conductor
and an insulator and describe how
those examples are used to
help/protect/prevent something. Be
sure your use is in terms of
ELECTRICITY.
