UNIT 3 –
LESSON 7
The Nervous
System
The Human Body
2
Word Cloud
What are you excited about today?
3
• I can describe the nervous system as part of a larger, interconnected system.
• I can read and answer comprehension questions about the nervous system.
• I can form and use irregular plural nouns. [L.3.1b]
• I can identify the meaning of the common prefixes, un-,non-, re-, pre-, dis-, and mis-. [RF.3.3a]
Today’s Learning Targets:
4
SPEAKING AND
LISTENING
5
Before Reading: The Nervous System
Before we start today, let’s
review with some questions to
remember what we learned
about the human body so far.
6
How are the skeletal system and the muscular system interconnected?
Name the system you have heard about that are interconnected with the muscular system.
Share what you remember about the different types of muscles and where they are located in the human body.
Before Reading: The Nervous System
7
What is the difference between voluntary and
involuntary muscles? Can you name examples of each?
Remember that cells are the building blocks of life. Different types of cells make up the tissues that are part of the different organs in the human body.
Let’s find out some of the vocabulary that we will hear today.
Before Reading: The Nervous System
8
Before Reading: The Nervous System
command -
control; power
9
Before Reading: The Nervous System
consciously -
done on purpose;
deliberately
10
Before Reading: The Nervous System
coordinates -
to make different things
work together
effectively as a whole
11
Before Reading: The Nervous System
receptors-
organs or nerve
endings that receive
information from
inside and outside
the body and send
that information to
the brain
12
Before Reading: The Nervous System
reflex -
an action that
happens almost
instantly, often
without the brain
sending a message
to perform the
action
13
Before Reading: The Nervous System
The system that we learn
about today is the system
that controls all the other body systems.
Look at Ricardo’s T-shirt.
What do you predict will
be a part of this system?
What do you think this
system might be called?
14
Before Reading: The Nervous System
Today’s reading is called The Nervous System.
In our next two read alouds you will hear about how the nervous system is closely interconnected with the other systems in the human body.
15
Before Reading: The Nervous System
The word nervous in this
context has nothing to do with
feeling anxious, worried, or
scared about something.
What does the nervous system
control?
16
Before Reading: The Nervous System
Let’s review our KWL charts.
We will add information
that we know already in
the “K” section and add
any more questions that
we have before we begin reading.
17
Before Reading: The Nervous System
Listen carefully to learn
about the nervous system
and how it commands the
interconnected human body
systems. Listen for new
information to add to our
KWL charts.

What is the part of the axial skeleton system that encases the brain? Why is it important for the brain to be protected by these bones?
The skull protects the brain. The brain is vulnerable.
Damage to the brain is very serious and can affect
the functions of all of the systems of the human
body.
What is the purpose of the network of nerves in the nervous system?
The nerves link the brain and the spinal cord to
muscles and other organs all over the body, sending signals throughout the body.
After Reading: The Nervous System
27
Stand up and stretch. Describe what happened
between your brain, your muscles, and your bones.
Once the conscious, voluntary decision to stand up
was made, electrical signals were sent from the brain
down the spinal cord, along the nerves, to the muscles
involved in standing. These signals coordinated the
timing of the muscles to contract and told them how
long to contact, helping the bones to move.
Could your brain be the command center of your body
if you had no receptors? Why or why not?
No. Receptors are nerve cells that collect messages
from inside the body and through the five sense, and
send these messages to the brain. The brain is able to
help the body process how to react and understand the
world around you.
After Reading: The Nervous System
28
Word Work: Consciously & Unconsciously
In the Read-Aloud you heard,
“You make voluntary decisions,
consciously controlling your
own actions with your brain.”
You also heard, “Most likely,
you jerked your hand away
from the heat very quickly,
almost unconsciously.”

Adjective or Noun

The prefix un-
How does the prefix un- change the
meaning of consciously?
It makes it mean the opposite of
consciously.

will help you. Then I would like you to add the prefix un- to the word and tell me what
that new word means.

READING
Chapter 5: The Nervous System
34
Before Reading: The Nervous System
Today’s reading is called The
Nervous System.
Before we start today, let’s
review what we have learned so
far in this unit.
35
Important information to
remember:
● Joints are cushioned by cartilage, which
is flexible, connective tissue.
● Ligaments connect bones to bones.
● Tendons connect muscles to bones.
● The Achilles tendon is named for a Greek
warrior named Achilles who was
wounded in the back of his foot, where he was vulnerable.
Before Reading: The Nervous System
36
Before Reading: The Nervous System
Before we begin we are going
to preview vocabulary from this
reading. We will work on
segmenting them into syllables to help read them correctly on your own.
37
Before Reading: The Nervous System
cell body -
the center of the cell
38
Before Reading: The Nervous System
dendrite -
a path along which
nerves send messages
to the brain
39
Before Reading: The Nervous System
reflex -
reaction
40
Before Reading: The Nervous System
flinch -
to draw back suddenly,
which is an example of
a reflex

1.
Now we will be rereading chapter 5, The
Nervous System.
2.
Go to your table of contents and find our reading for today and turn to it in our books.
3.
We will be working through this chapter
together, sometimes reading all together, sometimes listening to the teacher read, and sometimes with a neighbor next to us. Then, answering questions.

Pages 32 & 33
Let’s read the title together. Look at the

●Why does a doctor tap your knee with a hammer during a checkup?
○The doctor is checking your
reflexes. If your leg moves a
little, that’s a sign your nervous
system is working as it should.
