Defining relative clauses: Grammar 3C

2

Defining relative clauses

Why do we use them?

  • We use relative pronouns (who, which, where) in defining relative clauses to explain what a person, place or thing is or does

  • We use who for people. That's the woman who has a black cat.

  • We use which for things. This is the jumper which my mum made.

  • We use where for places. There is the park where I go to relax.

3

Special rules....

  • The verb after where needs an subject

    • e.g. A library is a place where you can rent books.

  • We can also use which to talk about a place

    • e.g. A library is a place which rents books.

4

Special rules....

  • That can be used instead of who or which

    • e.g. That's the man who/that walks his dog every morning.

    • e.g. This is the chair which/that I bought online.
