What are simple sentences?
A simple sentence consists of one independent clause
with a subject and a verb, expressing a complete thought.

Compound sentences are formed by joining two
independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction or a
semicolon. They express two related ideas in one sentence.

He wants to go to the
lake, but he doesn't know
how to swim.

What are complex sentences?
A complex sentence is a type of sentence that consists of one
independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. The
dependent clause relies on the independent clause to form a
complete thought. Complex sentences are useful for combining
related ideas and showing the relationships between them.

Examples of complex sentences
Although it was raining heavily, the athletes continued their
practice on the field.
Because she had studied hard for the exam, Maria felt confident
when she sat down to take it.
After the concert had ended, the audience stood up and
applauded for several minutes.

sentences are made up of
two independent clauses and
at least one dependent
clause. They combine
elements of both compound
and complex sentences.
