All About Flamingos

Flamingos are some of the coolest birds in the world! With their bright pink feathers and long legs, they are easy to spot in the wild. Let’s learn more about these fascinating birds!

What Do Flamingos Look Like?

Flamingos are famous for their pink color. But did you know that baby flamingos are gray when they are born? As they grow up, they turn pink because of what they eat. Flamingos love to eat tiny shrimp and algae that make their feathers change color!

They have long, skinny legs that can be as tall as three feet! Their necks are also long and curved, and their beaks are special. They are shaped to help them scoop up food from the water.

Where Do Flamingos Live?

Flamingos like to live in warm places, such as lakes, lagoons, and wetlands. They often gather in large groups called colonies. These colonies can have hundreds or even thousands of flamingos! Being in a group helps them find food and stay safe from animals that might want to eat them.

What Do Flamingos Eat?

Flamingos are filter feeders. This means they use their beaks to sift through mud and water to find food. They eat tiny shrimp, small fish, and algae. When they eat, you might see them standing on one leg. This helps them balance and keep warm!

Flamingo Families

Flamingos are very social and often live in families. When two flamingos want to mate, they perform a special dance. After they mate, they build a nest out of mud. The female usually lays one egg, and both parents take turns keeping it warm. When the baby flamingo hatches, it is gray and needs a lot of care!

Fun Flamingo Facts!

  • Flamingos can live for 20 to 30 years in the wild!

  • They can fly very well and travel long distances if needed.

  • Flamingos are often seen standing on one leg, which helps them save energy.
