The tale of the Thousand temples
Once upon a time there were two kingdoms in java, Penging and Boko. Prabu Damar moyo ruled the kingdom of Penging while Prabu Boko ruled the kingdom of Boko with the help of his loyal advisor Patih Gupolo.
One day Prabu Boco led an attack on Panging. The Penging Army was defeated and Prabu Damar Moyo was killed. Prabu Boko then took princess roro jongrang the daughter of Prabu Damar Moyo as his prisoner. Roro Jonggrang was a beautiful princess and Bandung Bondowoso, the son of Prabu Boko was immediately smitten with her. He asked her to marry him but she refused. She was afraid of him and did not want to marry him. Bandung Bondowoso was determined to have Roro Jonggrang as his wife. He used his magic powers to build a thousand temples in one night. Roro Jonggrang was impressed by his magic, but she still refused to marry him. She came up with a plan to trick Bandung Bondowoso. She asked him to light the lamps on the temples so that she could see them better. Bandung Bondowoso agreed and he ordered his minions to light the lamps. When the lamps were lit, Roro Jonggrang ordered the women of the Kingdom to pound rice. The noise of the pounding rice sounded like the quarring of the roosters. Thinking that it was dawn, Bandung Bondowoso stopped the construction of the temples. Bandung Bondowoso was furious when he realized that he had been tricked. He cursed Roro Jonggrang and turned her into a statue. The statue is said to be standing guard over the temples that Bandung Bondowoso built which are now known as the prambanan temples.
The story of Roro Jonggrang is a popular folk tale in Indonesia. It teaches us the importance of being careful what we wish for and that we should never underestimate the power of women. The story is also a reminder of the beauty and cultural heritage of Indonesia. The prambalan temples are UNESCO world heritage site and they are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
