Jodi and Oscar are working to simplify: 3(4n - 9). Jodi says the answer is -15n, and Oscar says the answer is 12n - 27. Is either student correct? Explain.


When you distribute the 3 to the 4n, the product is 12n, then when you distribute the 3 to the (-9), the product is -27. Those terms being unalike they cannot be combined, so the result is 12n - 27, which matches Oscar's result.
