Do Now
Mrs. Sullivan made a quick breakfast smoothie. Mrs. Sullivan added 300 grams
of yogurt and 150 grams of frozen berries into a blender. She noticed a change
as she blended the mixture. It was now smooth and creamy.
Complete the following sentences.
Before blending the smoothie, the total mass of the yogurt and frozen berries was
_____ grams. After she blended the smoothie and poured it into her glass, the
mass of the smoothie was _______ grams.

Patterns on Earth
LO:SWBAT describe and illustrate the continuous
movement of water above the surface of Earth through the
water cycle.
DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly describe and illustrate
the continuous movement above the surface of Earth
through the water cycle in at least 4 of 5 questions.
SCI.4.10A Describe and illustrate the continuous movement of water above and on the surface of Earth through the water cycle and
explain the role of the Sun as a major source of energy in this process.

How can we model the water cycle?
Follow the steps to make a model of the water cycle.
Describe how different parts of the water cycle
happen in the model.
Draw a diagram of your model that shows parts of
the water cycle.
Compare the model of the water cycle to the actual
water cycle.

Water Cycle
Explain how the liquid water at
the bottom of the bag moved
over time.
Heat from light caused
some of the water to
evaporate. Then some of
the water condensed and
formed droplets on the
side of the bag.

What is the water cycle?
The water cycle is the change of water from one state to another
as it moves between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere

What is evaporation?
Evaporation is a slow change from
liquid to gas.
When water is a gas, it is called
water vapor, and we cannot see it.
The Sun provides energy that warms
water, causing some of it to
evaporate. When water on Earth’s
surface evaporates, it moves into the
atmosphere.

What is condensation?
Condensation is the change from gas to liquid.
Clouds are water that condensed in the atmosphere.

What is precipitation?
Precipitation is when water falls from the sky as rain, snow, hail, or
sleet.
After falling to Earth’s surface, liquid water may run over land and
collect in bodies of water such as lakes and oceans.

Let’s Revisit the Phenomenon
What happens to the water in the open and closed containers?
20
14
Interaction
When two or more
things work
together or react to
each other
21
15
Atmosphere
A thin layer of
gases that
surrounds the
Earth
22
16
Water Cycle
The change of water
from one state to
another as it moves
between Earth’s
surface and the
atmosphere
23
17
Condensation
Condensation is the
process of a gas
cooling and changing
to a liquid. This is
how clouds are
formed in the water
cycle.
24
18
Precipitation
The falling of water
back to the Earth in the
form of a liquid (rain,
snow, sleet, or hail)
25
19
Evaporation
The process by
which liquid water
changes into water
vapor
