Spain's Government

Spain has a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, which means it has a king, but the king's role is mostly ceremonial, and the government is run by elected officials.

1. The King: The king is the head of the country, but his powers are limited. He does things like meet with other world leaders and represent Spain at events, but he doesn't make the laws.

2. The Prime Minister: The Prime Minister is the head of the government and makes decisions about how the country is run.

3. The Parliament: Spain has a parliament made up of two parts:

- The Congress of Deputies: This is the main part of the parliament, and it has 350 members who are elected by the people.

- The Senate: This is the second part of the parliament. It has 266 members, some chosen by the people and others by regional governments.

4. The Courts: Spain has judges who make sure laws are followed. The highest court in Spain is the Supreme Court.

The government of Spain is based on a set of rules called the
Constitution of 1978, which was made after Spain ended a long period of dictatorship. The Constitution makes sure that Spain is a democracy, where people have rights and freedoms.

Who is the king of Spain?

The current King of Spain is King Felipe VI. He became king on June 19, 2014, when his father, King Juan Carlos I, decided to step down.

King Felipe VI’s job is mostly ceremonial, which means he doesn’t make laws or run the country. He represents Spain at important events and meetings, both in Spain and around the world. He also helps with some official duties, like naming the Prime Minister after the people’s representatives choose one.

King Felipe VI is married to Queen Letizia, and they have two daughters: Princess Leonor, who will one day be the queen, and Infanta Sofía.

Many Spaniards are mad the Spanish government. Why?

Spaniards are mad about the recent floods for a few main reasons:

When the floods happened, many people felt that the government didn’t act quickly enough to help. It took time for emergency services to arrive, and some people didn’t get the help they needed right away. People were upset that the government wasn’t ready to deal with the disaster.

In some areas, the roads, drainage systems, and flood defenses weren’t good enough to stop the flooding. Some towns and cities have old or broken systems, which made the floods worse. People think the government should have fixed these problems before the floods happened.

15

Why Spaniards are mad the government...

The floods caused a lot of damage to homes, businesses, and roads, and some people lost their lives. People are angry because they feel this could have been prevented if the government had done more to protect communities from the flooding.

Some people feel that the government in Madrid (the capital) doesn’t understand the needs of smaller towns and rural areas. They think decisions are made far away from the places that were affected, and they want more attention to be given to local problems.

Flooding is a problem that keeps happening in some parts of Spain, especially near rivers or low areas. People are frustrated because they feel the government hasn’t done enough to stop it from happening again.
