This is the rule that we have to follow

​1. Had+past participle

We use this tense to talk about somethings or action took place in the past before another past action

For example : When I arrived the teacher had finished his teaching.

​2. We use it for the order of past action

When we are not talking about them in the order that they happened .

For example: When Sally arrived the Café ,Josh had already gone

We usually use simple perfect tense, but it is also possible to use past perfect tense.
