The Battle of Gonzales, the first battle of the Texas Revolution

1 On October 2, 1835, rebellious settlers in Texas and Mexican soldiers fought in the

small town of Gonzales. It was just a short fight. Only one person was lost. Yet, the
fight began something very important. It was the first battle of Texas' War of
Independence from Mexico. Back then, Texas was part of Mexico. The rebellious
residents of Texas were a group with mostly European backgrounds known as
"Texians." What led to their clash with Mexican troops? Why was the Battle of Gonzalez so
important? The Battle of Gonzalez is important because..
rebellious – to fight back

The Cannon Of Gonzales
2 Some years before, the people of Gonzales had asked for a cannon. They wanted
it to protect themselves against frequent attacks by the Comanche tribe. The Mexican
government gave them a cannon. In September 1835, a small group of Mexican
soldiers came to take it back. The people of Gonzales angrily refused to return the
cannon. They even arrested the soldiers sent to take it back. What would Texas possibly be
like if the people of Gonzalez did give the cannon back to Mexico? Texas would probably be…
frequent - usual
