23

Conversation (Verses 19)

  • Deuteronomy 12:5 specifically says that God would choose a place for the Israelites to worship in the Promised Land. The Jews believed the account given in 1 Kings 8:16 and 29, in which Solomon dedicated the temple in Jerusalem as that special place of worship. The Samaritans claimed that Mount Gerazim was that special place. The Samaritan woman is bringing this up to pick a

fight with Jesus about the right place to worship.

24

What does worshiping in spirit and in truth mean?

  • It is necessary to worship Jesus in Spirit because He is the one who causes the baptism of the Holy Spirit to arrive. Jesus promised that, after His ascension, the Spirit would dwell in His followers. To worship in the Spirit, one must be a true disciple of Jesus, which means a person is indwelt by the Spirit.

  • Jesus is also the truth. He is the one who brings in the New Testament or Covenant. This means in one sense that He established the New Covenant as an agreement, but it also refers to the truth that comes through Him. The Gospels tell about Jesus’ life and work, and the rest of the New Testament gives us the truth that Jesus taught His disciples.

3

Jesus met the Samaritan woman's needs by providing the spirit and truth

4
Jesus ignored her struggles and focused on others.

28

Conversation (Verses 25-30)

  • Jesus reached out to this woman despite her resistance. Even the disciples were surprised that Jesus talked to her. Jesus helped this woman identify her needs. She had spent her life trying to find satisfaction in relationships, and Jesus helped her understand that she could only be truly satisfied through a right relationship with God.

  • Jesus as Messiah came to pay for her sins. Jesus was God’s truth to mankind and soon the Spirit would baptize all who were true disciples of Jesus.
