• You can add to the discussion in different ways:

  • Come on the mic and share

  • Type in the zoom chat

  • Comment on at least 2 classmates' posts that on the padlet

Time for Discussion

• A summary is when someone describes the key details of a text in their own words.

• Summarizing is an excellent way to:

  • share information

  • check comprehension

  • practice active reading

  • aid long-term understanding of a text

• There are multiple strategies to write a strong summary, if you need a reminder, click through the slides on page 3 of your edio lesson

Summary Review

The 5W's help you select the main details from any type of text. Think about what you read and ask yourself:

• What is happening?

• Who is involved?

• Where is it happening?

• When is it happening?

• Why is it happening?

Keep this in mind as we watch the video on page 4 in the edio lesson

Summary Example

• Summaries are frequently short and to the point.

• You include not only the most important events but also some of the events that lead up to the main details.

• Effective summaries have elements in common.

Summarizing Do's and Don'ts

• Choose the Lit Circle job that you are going to complete today

• Read the pages for today from your Reading Schedule on page 92 of your ELA Notebook

• While you read, make sure you are annotating either in your book or on the notes pages in your ELA Notebook

• After you read and complete your job, head to the padlet to share
