Directions: The illustration shows
some of the steps in the water
cycle. Use the illustration and
explain what parts of the water
cycle are being represented by the
letters.

Patterns on Earth
LO:SWBAT explain the role of the Sun as a major source of
energy in the water cycle.
DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly explain the role of the
Sun as a major source of energy in the water cycle in at
least 4 of 5 questions.
SCI.4.10A Describe and illustrate the continuous movement of water above and on the surface of Earth through the water cycle and
explain the role of the Sun as a major source of energy in this process.

How does water get into the air?
Procedure
1.
Refer back to your water cycle model.
2.
Observe the changes inside the bag.
3.
Answer the reflection questions on your student activity sheet.
9
9
How does water get into the air?
The Sun warms up the water, causing
evaporation. The water started to disappear from
the bottom of the bag.
Water vapor will gather at the top of the bag,
representing condensation. This is like the clouds
forming.
Eventually, small droplets will form and slide down,
representing precipitation (rain).
The water droplets will collect again at the bottom
of the bag, showing collection.
"What happens to the water when the Sun
warms it up?"
"Where do you see the clouds forming in the
bag?"
"How does the water come back down?"
"Where does the water end up after it 'rains'
inside the bag?"

Evaporation
Describe a way you could model evaporation caused by the Sun.
You could put water in
a container and put the
container under a
bright light.

The Water Cycle
Which process is
observed when a
puddle of water
becomes water
vapor?
13
13
Let’s revisit the phenomenon
How does the
water cycle
change ocean
water to
freshwater?
14
14
Water Cycle
The change of water
from one state to
another as it moves
between Earth’s
surface and the
atmosphere
15
15
Evaporation
The process by
which liquid water
changes into water
vapor
16
16
Condensation
Condensation is the
process of a gas
cooling and changing
to a liquid. This is
how clouds are
formed in the water
cycle.
17
17
Precipitation
The falling of water
back to the Earth in the
form of a liquid (rain,
snow, sleet, or hail)
18
18
Runoff
Water that moves
over the ground
and into oceans
and rivers
19
19
Collection
When water that falls
from the clouds is
temporarily stored in
bodies of water, such
as rivers, lakes, and
oceans.

Water Cycle
Which of the following shows the processes of the water cycle in order,
beginning with the Sun heating Earth's water?
A.
Condensation, evaporation, precipitation
B.
Evaporation, precipitation, condensation
C.
Precipitation, condensation, runoff
D.
Evaporation, condensation, precipitation
