Week 2 – Cycles of Matter

Recycling matter in ecosystems - 13 November 2024

2

media

• Explain that matter is constantly recycled.

• Students will be able to explain how matter

like water and nitrogen move in cycles.

• Students will be able to draw diagrams and

explain the processes of the water cycle and
the nitrogen cycle.

The cycling of matter. Because

there are only finite amounts of

nutrients available on the earth, they

must be recycled in order to ensure

the continued existence of living

organisms.

- A biogeochemical cycle, or more generally a cycle of

matter,[1] is the movement and transformation of
chemical elements and compounds between living
organisms, the atmosphere ( air ), and the Earth's
crust ( land )

- Major biogeochemical cycles include the carbon cycle,

the nitrogen cycle, water cycle, oxygen cycles, carbon
and phosphorus cycles.

The sun’s heat changes water from
the Earth’s bodies of water into water

vapor is call evaporation

The liquid water turns into an invisible

gas or vapor during evaporation.

The Sun

The heat of the sun is what makes
the water cycle work.

What’s Next in the

Cycle?

The invisible vapor rises into the

atmosphere, where the air

temperature is cold.

Condensation is what makes clouds
form!

The cold air causes the water vapor to

condense into clouds and water droplets.

Now the vapor or gas has turned back into liquid

form is called condensation.

18

Multiple Choice

Cloud is formed through which process?

Evaporation

2

Transpiration

The Next Step of the Water Cycle

After the clouds have formed because

of condensation, they begin to get

heavier and heavier with water

droplets.

Precipitation is the water falling
from the clouds. Depending on the
air temperature, precipitation can
be in the form of rain, hail, snow,

or sleet.

When the droplets are

heavy enough, they begin
to fall from the clouds as

precipitation.

Surface runoff isthe draining away of water
(or substances carried in it) from the surface of an
area of land, a building or structure.
