Spelling Comparative Adjectives Rules

Rule Type

Comparative

Add -er
smart = smarter

Change the “y” to “i” and add
-er

happy = happier

Use “more” + adjective

famous = more famous

Examples:

good = better

bad = worse

Double the consonant and
add -er

big = bigger

1.One-syllable adjectives

3.Two-syllable adjectives
ending in Y

4.Adjectives or adverbs with
two or more syllables

5.Irregular verbs
