What is
Ecologist
School?

Ecologist School is a hands-on

curriculum developed by Families in
Nature (based in Texas) that engage
children in 16 types of environmental science

Through these hands-on STEAM

STEAM
Activity:
Science

Watch 10 minutes of the Monterey Bay

Aquarium Kelp Forest Cam.

Record what you see! How many fish?

What kind? What else is in their

habitat? Draw your own kelp forest!

14

media

Science Seed

The kelp forest is an important habitat
for a lot of sea life. The kelp provides
a continuous source of nutritious food
as well as a safe place for animals to
hide from predators and storms. Kelp
forests are similar to tree forests on

land. Some animals swim in the

canopy at the top of the kelp forest,
while others live on the fronds and

down below.

Construct a model fish that floats
using materials from your recycling

pile. See if you can create a
floatation device that acts as a

swim bladder for your fish. Test it
in your bathtub, a pool, or even a
tub of water. Take a photo of it to
keep as a memory, then recycle the

materials you used to build it.

Science Seed

Most fish regulate their buoyancy by
using a swim bladder. They push air

into the swim bladder to help them rise
in the water column, and push air out of

the swim bladder to sink back down.
