Subject: Noun or Pronoun (Person, Place, Thing, Idea, He, She, It, They, Them)
Verb: Action Word (What is the noun or pronoun doing?)
Agreement: They work together and go together
Singular: only 1 noun or pronoun (She, He, It, You)
Plural: More than 1 noun or pronoun (we, they, them)
To-Be Verbs + ing: Is, Are, Were, Was and a verb ending in -ing

If you have only 1 noun or pronoun, then the
verb has an -s at the end.
EXAMPLES:
She covers the baby with a blanket.
Juan hits the baseball really hard.
The car handles really well.
The building stands tall.

Plural
If you have 2 or more nouns or pronouns (They, them, we),
then you do NOT add an -s at the end.
EXAMPLES:
They cover the baby with a blanket.
Juan and David hit the baseball really hard.
The cars handle really well.
The buildings stand tall.
The thoughts race through her brain.

To-Be Verbs + -ing Verb
This works in past and present tense. The difference is the “to-be” verb. It was you are actively doing
something, or were actively doing something, you use: is, are, was, were and then add a normal verb
with an -ing ending.
EXAMPLES:
They are covering the baby with a blanket.
Juan and David were hitting the baseball really hard.
The car is handling really well.
The building was standing tall.
The thoughts are racing through her brain.

Compound Subjects using “and”
If you see a subject with an “and”, then the verb
is plural, so the verb does NOT end in an -s.
EXAMPLES:
Beverly and Sam see a movie together at the
theatre.
He and she are flying in an airplane.
My cousin and I enjoy seeing plays together.
Javier and Mary go a party together.
Apples and grapes are my children’s favorite
fruits.

Compound Subjects using “or”
If you see a subject with an “or” or “nor”, then
the verb is usually singular, so the verb ends in
an -s. If the nouns are plural, then the verb is
plural.
EXAMPLES:
The grey suit nor the white suit seems
appropriate for the wedding.
He or she needs to make up his or her mind. .
A pencil or pen is fine to write your name.
Apples or bananas are a healthy snack.
Bikes or skateboards are a good way to get
around.
