Today we will be learning how to count
syllables in words.
2
A syllable is a part of a word that contains
sounds. It is also called a beat, and you can
count syllables by clapping out the beats.
3
Another way to count syllables is by putting
your hand under your chin as you say the
word and counting how many times your
jaw drops.
4
Let’s practice counting syllables. You can
count syllables using the method that helps
you learn best.

Great
Work!
50
Today’s objective:
You will be able to name and continue a
repeating pattern.
51
What is a repeating
pattern?
A repeating pattern has a
rule that repeats over and
over again.
52
Watch this video to learn about how we
name patterns!

53
Naming Patterns
Each new picture, shape, color, or
movement gets a new letter! That’s
how a pattern is named!
54
Let’s
practice!
55
We’re going to use
our bodies to make
some patterns!
56
The first thing we will do
is stomp! Since this is the
first thing we’re doing, we
give it the name A.
57
The next thing we will do
is clap! Since this is the
second thing we’re doing,
we give it the name B.
58
For this pattern every stomp will be A
and every clap will be B!
A
B
59
This is an AB pattern since we keep repeating A and B.

Can you think of a different AB pattern to try with our bodies?
60
Awesome!
Let’s try a different kind of
pattern!
61
The first thing we will do
is pat! Since this is the
first thing we’re doing, we
give it the name A.
62
The next thing we will do
is snap! Since this is the
second thing we’re doing,
we give it the name B.
63
For this pattern every pat will be A
and every snap will be B!

64
This is an AAB pattern since we repeat A twice and B
once.

fourth thing we’re doing,
we give it the name D.

A, every pat will be B, every clap will
be C, and every snap will be D!

page together!
79
We’re going to color
the gingerbread
men in an AB
pattern!
Pick 2 colors!
80
Color the first

your first color!
That’s your A!

Color the second
gingerbread man
your second color!
That’s your B!
82
Go back to your A
color for the next
gingerbread man!
Finish your AB
pattern!

84
We’re going to color
the trees in an AAB
pattern!
Pick 2 colors!
85
Color the first tree
your first color!
That’s your A!
86
Color the second
tree your first color
too, because it’s
also A!
87
Color the third tree
your second color!
That’s your B!
88
Go back to your A
color for the next
tree!
Finish your AAB
pattern!
89
Awesome!
90
We’re going to color
the gingerbread
men in an ABC
pattern!
Pick 3 colors!
91
Color the first
gingerbread man
your first color!
That’s your A!
92
Color the second
gingerbread man
your second color!
That’s your B!
93
Color the third
gingerbread man
your third color!
That’s your C!
94
Go back to your A
color for the next
gingerbread man!
Finish your ABC
pattern!
95
Awesome!
96
Make your own
pattern for the last
set of trees! Make
sure you know how
to name your
pattern!

Great work! Today we are going to learn
about beginning sounds.
Beginning sounds are the very first sounds you hear in words.
These can also be called initial sounds or first sounds.
Let’s look at some examples!
125
Hat begins
with H.
126
Rim begins
with R.
127
Bond begins
with B.
128
Sing begins
with S.
129
Check for Understanding:
What is a beginning sound?
Which part of the word can you find the beginning sound in?
What are the two other words you might hear that mean the
same thing as beginning sound?
130
Great work so far!
You will need your whiteboards for this
next activity.
131
The following slides will have a picture and
a word, but it is missing the beginning
sound! You will need to write down the
missing beginning sound on your white
board.
Ready, set, go!

beginning sound! The next slides will have
a word, and you will read that word. Each
time the slide changes, the middle and
ending sound will stay the same, but the
beginning sound will change. You will try
to read the new word with the new
beginning sound as fast as you can.

You will be able to represent
numbers 1-10 by using a ten-frame
to identify how much less a number
is than 10.
196
This is a ten-frame!
Why do you think it’s called a ten-frame?
197
Because it has 10
individual boxes,
or frames!
