Parts of a whole can also be named by using decimal numbers. In

a decimal number we can see the numerator, but we cannot see the

denominator. The denominator of a decimal number is indicated by

place value.

​Example 1: Write seven tenths as a fraction and as a decimal.
Solution: 7/10 and 0.7

​Example 3: Name the shaded part of this square as a fraction and decimal.

​Solution: 23/100 and 0.23

Example 2: In the number 12.34579, which digit is in the thousandths place?
Solution: The 5 is in the thousandths place.

​Reading Decimals

​Example: Read this decimal number: 123.123
First we read the whole-number part. When we come to the decimal point,

we say “and.” Then we read the fraction part, ending with the name of the

last decimal place.
