EL Emerging Nature Test Review
3
The ocean is a vast, deep body of saltwater that covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface. This huge underwater world is filled with diverse life, from tiny fish to massive mammals. Whales are among the largest animals in the ocean and are known for their impressive size and strength. These gentle giants breathe air through a blowhole on top of their heads, and some, like the blue whale, can grow as long as three school buses! Whales play an important role in the ocean ecosystem, helping keep the food chain balanced.

Octopus
Octopuses are also fascinating ocean animals, though they are much smaller than whales. They have soft, flexible bodies and eight arms covered in suction cups, which help them move and catch food. Known for their intelligence, octopuses can solve puzzles, escape from small spaces, and even change color to blend in with their surroundings, hiding from predators. Both whales and octopuses are important parts of the ocean’s ecosystem, each helping to keep the ocean healthy and full of life.

Tundra
The tundra is a cold, open area with no trees. Only tough animals, like the polar bear, can survive here by hunting seals in icy waters. Penguins live far away in the southern tundra of Antarctica. In the tundra, you can see icebergs, which are big floating pieces of ice, and glaciers, which are large sheets of ice that move slowly. In winter, the dark sky sometimes lights up with the aurora. The aurora is a colorful light show in the sky, with green, pink, and purple lights dancing over the frozen land.

Aurora
An aurora is a beautiful display of colorful lights in the sky, often seen in places close to the North and South Poles. It happens when particles from the sun reach Earth and bump into gases like oxygen and nitrogen in our atmosphere. This creates bursts of energy, which we see as glowing lights in shades of green, pink, purple, and sometimes red or blue. These lights move and shift across the sky, looking like waves or curtains. Auroras are usually called the Northern Lights when seen in the north and the Southern Lights when seen in the south.

Volcano
A volcano is a mountain that can release hot materials from deep inside the Earth. Inside the volcano, there is a liquid called magma. When magma comes out of the volcano during an eruption, it is called lava. Lava flows down the slope of the volcano, which is the side of the mountain. Sometimes, an eruption also causes an ash cloud to rise into the sky. This ash can spread over large areas, covering the ground with tiny pieces of rock.

Volcanic Eruption
During an eruption, the magma travels up through a passage inside the volcano called a conduit. The magma reaches the surface through an opening called a vent. Some eruptions are very powerful, causing fast-moving flows of hot gas and rock called pyroclastic flows. These flows can be very dangerous. After an eruption, the lava can cool down and become solid rock, like obsidian, which is smooth and shiny. Volcanic eruptions can change the shape of the land and even create new mountains.
