Roots
Even though we can't see them under the soil, all plants have roots that carry water into the plant.
The roots act like straws and drink in water from the soil to keep the plant hydrated.
The roots also keep the plant firmly in the ground so that it does not blow away on a windy day!
11
Stem
Once the water travels up the roots it enters the stem.
The stem supports the plant by keep it standing up tall.
The stem also carries water and nutrients from the soil to all the parts of the plant.
12
Leaves
The leaves are the food making factory of a plant.
Leaves use sunlight, water, and air to create food that the plant needs to stay alive.
13
Flower
The flower is the part of the plant that makes seeds for new plants to grow.
With the help of animals, wind, and people, pollen from flowers is spread to other flowers.
As a result new seeds are formed so that plants will continue to spread and grow.
14
Stems
The yellow circled part, is called a stem. This holds up the flower! It also acts like a straw and sucks the water up from the roots to give to the flower
15
Roots
These are roots - they hold the plant in place and they also collect water from the soil to help send it up to the plant
16
Leaves
The yellow circled parts are the leaves! This help to make food for the plant by using sunlight! They also help make fresh oxygen for us to breathe.
17
Flowers and Fruit
The flowers attract insects to help make new plants with pollen. Flowers grow into fruit!
Plants PRODUCE food like apples, oranges, bananas, berries, nuts, etc.)
18
The Plant Life Cycle
A plant goes through several different stages before it is fully grown.
These stages are known as a life cycle which means they continue to happen in the same order over and over again.
19
Mature Plant
When a plant is done growing and has reached its full height, we call it a mature plant. Flowers will begin to open and new seeds can be born inside of the flowers allowing the cycle to begin again.
20
Tulips
What do you notice about the tulip seeds, baby, and parent plant? What do they have in common? What is different? Consider: Leaf/color/appearance/vines/clusters
21
Cherry Tomatoes
What do you notice about the cherry tomato seeds, baby, and parent plant? What do they have in common? What is different? Consider: Leaf/color/appearance/vines/clusters
22
Seed Coat
The first part of the seed is called the seed coat. The seed coat protects the seed just like a winter coat protects you from cold weather.
The seed coat is all around the outside of the seed.
23
Embryo
The second part of the seed is called the embryo.
The embryo is a starter for the plant. If the conditions are right for the seed to grow, the embryo activates and begins germination. That means it will begin to grow into a plant!
24
Food Storage
A seed carries the food it needs for a new plant to grow. This is a supply of nutrients for the embryo and is made up of mostly starches.
25
Inside a Seed
This is what the inside of a bean seed looks like when it is opened up. You can see the embryo at the top. This is the part that will begin to grow into a plant if the conditions are right.
26
27
CAN YOU NAME THE PARTS OF THE PLANT?
28
LEAVES
Leaves take in light energy from the sun. The leaves use water, light energy, and a gas called carbon dioxide to make glucose. Glucose is a kind of sugar. It is food for the plant. Yes, plants make their own food! They use it to grow.
29

• Do you feed your plants hamburgers?
• What about dog food?
• Cat food?
• Do they make plant/tree food?
• Does anyone know how plants eat?
Would a plant survive if you gave it a sandwich?
How do plants eat?
56
•Plants use their leaves to absorb sunlight.
•absorb: to take in or soak up
•They take the sunlight, mixed with oxygen (air) and water in order to make their food.
•Plants don’t have mouths to eat with like we do, they create their own food on the inside when they have the right mixture.
Some text here about the topic of discussion.
Sunlight
57
• Can a plant sip from a straw?
• Do they like juice?
• Maybe Gatorade?
• Water?
• Does anyone know how plants drink?
Would a plant survive if you gave it milk?
How do plants drink?
58
• Plants use their roots to absorb water from the soil in a process called osmosis.
• osmosis: the movement of liquid into a living thing.
• Plants take the sunlight, mixed with oxygen (air) and water in order to make their food.
• Plants don’t have mouths to drink like we do, they use their roots like a straw and pull the water up into the plant.
