How Plants Grow

2

What Do Plants Need To Grow?

Plants need a few things in order to thrive and grow:

  • Water

  • Sunlight

  • Air

  • Soil

  • Space

  • The right temperature

3

How Water Helps Plants Grow:

Water helps plants grow by...

  • Helping plants make food during photosynthesis.

  • Helping plants stand up-right and keeping them healthy.

  • Brings nutrients from the soil to the plant.

  • Keeps plants nice and cool.

Photosynthesis is a process performed by plants that creates food for the plants using sunlight.
This process also releases the oxygen we, and other animals breathe in!

You can also give a plant too much or too little water and it will not survive!

4

How Sunlight Helps Plants Grow:

Sunlight helps plants grow by...

  • Providing the energy the plant needs to make its own food through the process of photosynthesis.

A plant can get too much or too little sunlight and can die if they do not get the right amount!

Sunlight and water are the most important things to help plants grow!

5

How Air Helps Plants Grow:

Air helps plants grow by...

  • Air gives the plant carbon monoxide during the process of photosynthesis.

    • The plants "breathe in" the carbon monoxide, and "breathe out" oxygen. Humans and animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon monoxide.

6

How Soil Helps Plants Grow:

Soil helps plants grow by...

  • The soil helps to hold the plant in place like an anchor for when it rains, is windy, or has an animal or human brush by the plant.

  • Soil provides nutrients for the plant from the Earth to help it stay strong, just like how we eat food to stay strong!

Making sure plants have the right temperature:

Giving plants space:

How Space and Temperature Help Plants Grow:

  • Plants need plenty of space so they can grow their roots down in the ground and get all the nutrients they need.

  • Plants need to be in the right temperature, or climate, to grow properly! If it is too hot they will dry up, but if it is too cold they will freeze!

The Great Plant Experiment!

We will be doing a science experiment where we will grow our own plants! For this experiment we will be growing three flowers in the classroom. One we will grow with NO sunlight and NO water. For another one will grow with NO sunlight but WITH water. For the last plant we will grow WITH sunlight and WITH water.
You will need you science notebook to keep track of the data we collect! I will show you on the next slide how we will keep track! You will be making three charts in your notebook for each plant, make sure you label each chart of what plant you are tracking!

Time in weeks:

Has the plant changed?

What you can see...

Week 1

no change

I just see dirt in the pot

Week 3

Week 4

This could be what your chart for week one of your plant with only water looks like!

Remember you will have the make THREE of these tables in your notebook.

We will be doing this experiment for four weeks so make sure you make your tables look exactly like this one! All of yout tables should look like the bottom one and be blank!
