What is a fraction ?
●A fraction is division
●Represents equal parts of a whole
Main Types of Fractions
Proper Fraction
4/17
Numerator is LESS than
denominator
ALWAYS Simplify fractions by
dividing both the numerator
and denominator by the GCF
(Greatest Common Factor)
Improper Fraction
17/4
Numerator is GREATER than
the denominator
ALWAY convert to a Mix
Fraction
Mix Fraction
Has a whole number and a
fraction.
Always simplify the fraction

Mix Numbers/ Fractions
Adding and Subtracting Mix Fraction
- You can adding and subtracting mix fractions or convert them to an improper fraction. It is your choice
Multiply Mix Fractions
- We CAN NOT multiply mix fractions we have to convert them to an IMPROPER fraction
5
Improper Fraction
A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator
We must ALWAYS convert Improper Fraction to a MIXED number
Examples:
6
Simplifying Fraction
We must ALWAYS simplify fractions to its lowest terms by divding the fraction by the Greatest Common Fraction (GCF)

Operating with fractions Review and Strategy
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Denominators MUST be the same:
●Find the LCM (Least Common Multiple)
Strategy
●Ask is the larger number denominator a multiple
of the other? If so keep it the same and multiply
the other denominator
or
●Multiply the denominators by each other
●When adding and subtracting Mix fraction set up
the problem vertically
9
Operating with fractions Review and Strategy
Adding and Subtracting MIX Fractions
Denominators MUST be the same:
●Find the LCM (Least Common Multiple)
Strategy
● Rewrite the problem Vertically and solve how you
would with regular proper fractions
OR
You can convert the mix fractions to improper fractions and then work out the problem
10
Operating with fractions Review and Strategy
Adding and Subtracting MIX Fractions
When Adding and Subtracting MIX fractions you ask the following:
1. Are the denominators the same? if not find the LCM
2. Am I subtracting? if you are you must make sure the numerator is greater than the other numerator if not you have to regroup

Dividing Fractions
To divide fractions we KEEP, CHANGE, FLIP
KEY:
●When dividing a unit fraction by a whole number the
answer will be a unit fraction
●When dividing a whole number by a unit fraction the
answer will be a whole number
Example:
¼÷ 3 = 1/12
¼ x ⅓ = 1/12
3 ÷ 1/4 =12
3 x 4 = 12

Operating with fractions Review and Strategy
Multiplying Fractions
To multiply fraction we multiply straight across.
Multiply the numerator with the numerator and
the denominator with the denominator
Example:
⅔ x ¼ = 2/12
Key
●When you are multiplying Mix fractions we
MUST change the Mix fraction to an improper
Fraction
●When you are multiplying fractions REMEMBER
a whole number as a fraction is over one
example: 3 = 3/1
13
Fraction as Division
A fraction represents DIVISION. So ⅗ is 3 ÷ 5 and 15/7 is 15 ÷ 7
Key:
●Anytime there is an improper fraction we must change it to a mix
fraction by dividing the denominator by the numerator .
●When there is a proper fraction we must ask ourselves can we
simplify the fraction to simplest terms
Example:
Cristiano has 7 apples he shares equally amongst 3 friends. What is the
amount of apples each friend receives?
7 ÷ 3 = 2 ⅓ - Each friend will get 2 ⅓ of an apple
14
Converting Customary Units
KEY:
●When converting from a smaller unit to a Larger unit. (DIVIDE)
●When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit (Multiply)
15
Metric System :
A system used to convert Grams (g) Liters (L) and Meters (M)
KEY
●Use the Acronym to help with converting the Metric Unit:
King Henry Died Unexpectedly Drinking Chocolate Milk
●
From smaller Unit to Large unit divide. Move the decimal to the left
●
From Larger Unit to Small Unit Multiply. Move the decimal to the
right

Explanation Slide...
There are 4 quarts in 1 gallon, so if you have 4 quarts of milk, you have 1 gallon.

Interpreting Data and Represent Data
18
Interpreting Data and Represent Data
Data falls into two groups
Numerical and Categorical
Numerical: Data that involves numbers
Categorical: Data the is in groups, such as gender, age, etc

Ways to represent a number
24
Hint:
If rounding to nearest whole number your answer should be a whole number
If rounding to nearest tenth your answer should have a number in the tenth place
If rounding to nearest hundredth your answer should have a number in the Hundredth place
If rounding to nearest thousandth your answer should have a number in the thousandth place

Adding and Subtracting Decimals
IMPORTANT
When Adding and Subtracting Decimals we MUST line the decimals up.
30
Dividing Decimals
Divisor: number being use to divide
Dividend: Number that is being divided
The divisor should not be a decimal. If it is we must slide the decimal to the right until its a whole number. and slide the decimal in the dividend the same number of times. then raise the decimal to the roof
31
How to Multiply decimals
Multiplying decimals
ignore the decimal
Multiply like normal
then bring back the decimal
Hint:
If your problem has 2 numbers behind the decimals, then your answer has ttwo numbers behind the decimals and so on!!
32
Evaluating Numerical Expression
An expression is a math sentence without an equal sign
Evaluate means to solve.
When evaluating expression underline the part you are solving then rewrite until to reach your final answer
