​Objectives:

I can answer questions about the definitions and usage of English 9 A vocabulary terms.

I can answer reading and comprehension on short passages about author's intent, main idea, and the structure of writing pieces

​Exam passage practice:

​The rainforest is home to many animals. It is important to protect rainforests because they provide food and shelter for countless species. Without these forests, many animals could lose their homes.

Question: Which piece of evidence supports the claim that rainforests are important for animals?

A) "The rainforest is home to many animals."

B) "Rainforests are full of trees and plants."

C) "Rainforests help provide shelter for animals."

​Vocab and Terminology


1. propel - to move something forward, this can be an object or a plan/idea.

2. passive - not direct, doing something without meaning to or purposely not being direct.

3. euphemism - a "nicer" way to say something

4. negative connotation - a word that has a bad/sad cultural meaning e.g. cheap

5. denotation - the dictionary definition of a word

What does it mean to decide something is effective?

- First determine what the goal of the author (or device) is.
- Then ask can the reader clearly understand?
- Is it too long or too wordy?
- Does it accomplish the goal?

If I tell you I am creating a presentation to help students with their math exam and when you view my presentation it is all about Spanish is that effective? Why or why not?

Different types of passages:

Compare Contrast - when the passage talks about what is the same AND what is different.

Cause and effect - when the passage talks about how one thing THEN led to another thing.

Problem and Solution - when the passage talks about a problem and how the problem can be or was fixed.

Sequential - when the passage tells a story in the order in which it happened.
