Specialized Organelles

Although plant and animal cells share many characteristics, some organelles differ between the cell types. These specialized organelles include:

  • cell wall;

  • chloroplast;

  • vacuole; and

  • centrioles.

media

8

The cell wall is located outside of the cell membrane. When you look at plant cells using a microscope, you likely see the cell walls rather than the cell membranes. The cell wall is thick and rigid, providing structure and support to plant cells.

Animal cells are more likely to need to change shape for movement, so they do not contain cell walls.

9

Chloroplasts are the organelles in plants that use sunlight to produce food. Chloroplasts make plants appear green because they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll that absorbs light to begin photosynthesis.

A plant cell can contain dozens of chloroplasts. Animal cells do not contain chloroplasts.

10

A vacuole is a membrane-bound sac inside of a cell. Vacuoles typically store materials for the cell. Some vacuoles store waste. Other vacuoles store water. Still other vacuoles store food the cell might need later.

media

Both plant and animal cells contain vacuoles, but the vacuoles appear different in each type of cell.

  • Plant cells tend to have one very large vacuole in the center of the cell that takes up most of the cell's space.

  • Animal cells tend to have several small vacuoles scattered throughout the cytoplasm.

11

Centrioles are rod-shaped organelles found near the nucleus of animal cells. Centrioles play a role in cell division. Centrioles produce fibers that help keep DNA organized when the cell divides. Centrioles occur in pairs.

Question image

Why do animals lack chloroplasts?

1

Animals cannot sense sunlight

2

Animals make their own food without chloroplasts

3

Animals consume food to gain energy

4

Animal cells only produce chloroplasts when the animal is hungry

Question image

Take a look at the comparison picture of a typical plant and animal cell. What differences do you notice?

16

Use your light microscope to examine two specimens.

  1. Assemble your light microscope.

  2. Obtain slide 93, Typical Plant Cell, and slide 3, Dog Colurmar Epithelium, c.s.

  3. Examine each specimen using low and medium power.

  4. Note the similarities and differences between each specimen.

17

You may notice the following about the specimens.

  1. The plant cells have fairly regular shapes with straight lines and corners. The animal cells have more irregular shapes and curved edges.

  2. Both types of cells have a visible nucleus and cytoplasm.

Note that the lines you can see around the plant cells are the cell wall, but the lines around animal cells are the plasma membrane. Plant cells still have a plasma membrane, but it is more difficult to see than the cell wall.

media

18

Although plant and animal cells contain several differences, they have many organelles in common. Both plant and animal cells contain:

  • plasma membrane

  • cytoplasm

  • nucleus

  • nucleolus

  • rough ER

  • smooth ER

  • ribosomes

  • Golgi body

  • vesicles

  • lysosomes

  • mitochondria

  • cytoskeleton

Some organelles are unique to plant and / or animal cells
