media

6

media
  • Symbolism is a literary device where objects, characters, actions, or settings are used to represent abstract ideas or concepts, adding depth and layers of meaning to a narrative.

  • While some symbols are commonly known and recognized others may differ from reader to reader based on their experiences and reading of the text

    • Example: symbol for wifi is widely recognized

  • Theme subjects are words and phrases that identify an idea throughout a work

Theme Annotation Example:

The phrase "soft automaticity" also supports the thematic message that relying too much on technology is detrimental to humanity's survival. Life is too easy. Even the lights going on and off is a smooth and automatic process. The characters do not have to think or do anything.

Style and Theme Annotation Example

The line where Bradbury lists things the home does for them is stylistically interesting because instead of listing each item with a comma, Bradbury includes and between each item. This emphasizes the exhaustive list.

Thematically, this line helps support the message that relying too much on technology is detrimental to humanity's survival. It takes care of everything for them and is "good to them." Without their technology, the characters would have a difficult time taking care of their basic needs.

Symbolism Annotation Example:

The symbol of the HappyLife Home represents the family's dependency on technology and lack of true purpose.
