The graph illustrates how many 13-year-old students studied French and Mandarin between 2000 and the present day in a school in England. The data highlights trends in the popularity of these two languages over time.

Overall, it is clear that Mandarin has steadily gained popularity among students, while French, despite experiencing a decline, remains the most widely studied language. According to the data, Mandarin has increased in popularity significantly during this period, whereas the trend for French has been the opposite.

In 2000, there was a stark difference in the number of students studying the two languages. The number of students who took French was 150, compared to just under 10 students who chose Mandarin. This disparity highlighted the dominance of French as a language option at the time.

Over the next five years, the number of students studying French fell considerably, while Mandarin saw a dramatic rise, reaching a peak of 75 students. Despite this, French gained some popularity in 2006 and has remained stable since then at around 90 students. Conversely, the number of Mandarin learners dipped in 2006 and fluctuated before returning to 75.

Since 2005, the trends in both languages have not changed significantly. Mandarin has established itself as a strong competitor to French, while French continues to hold its position as the most popular language option.

The graph illustrates the percentage of first-year teachers in Ontario with regular teaching jobs from 2001 to 2007, comparing English-language and French-language teachers.

Overall, French-language teachers consistently had higher employment rates compared to their English counterparts throughout the period. However, while the employment rate for English-language teachers declined significantly, the rate for French-language teachers remained relatively stable.

In 2001, around 70% of English-language teachers and 75% of French-language teachers secured regular teaching jobs. Over the next six years, the proportion of English-language teachers employed dropped sharply to below 30% by 2007. In contrast, the employment rate for French-language teachers fluctuated slightly but stayed within a range of 70% to 80% throughout the period.

The sharp decline for English-language teachers began after 2003, when their employment rate fell from 50% to just under 40% by 2005, before reaching its lowest point in 2007. Meanwhile, French-language teachers experienced minor variations but consistently maintained a strong employment rate.
