Learners can:

  • identify parts of a graphic novel's layout, figures, and text

  • identify a benefit and a challenge of using graphic novels as a teaching tool

6

  • Graphic novels are longer works that combine text and pictures to tell a story

  • Graphic novels are a form of text, not a genre

  • This means that graphic novels can be any genre: sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, biography, and more!

  • Graphic novels are a wonderful way to share information and stories because they:

    • use complementary visuals and text;

    • provide illustrations that give emotional clues that help explain the story;

    • rely heavily on elements such as metaphor, symbolism, and point of view; and

    • encourage learners to study stylistic differences and effects.
