What is a piecewise function?
A piecewise function is a function that has different pieces, functions, or rules for different input (x) values.
5
Important Vocabulary:
Input: "x" in the equation
Output: "y" in the equation; can also be written as f(x)
Domain: all of the x-values of the function
Range: all of the y-values of the function
6
How to Evaluate Piecewise Equations:
With the given function and rules, you will have different inputs (x values) to "plug in" and solve to find the output (y value).
The rules will be defined by inequality symbols.

Follow the Rules:

Multiple Choice
f(5) (input of 5) would go to...
x + 2
-x - 4
9
Multiple Choice
f(0) should go to...
x + 2
-x - 4
10
Multiple Choice
f(-2) should go to...
x + 2
-x - 4

Examples:
f(-2)
f(-2) = x + 2 (put in the input!)
f(-2) = -2 + 2
f(-2) = 0
f(0)
f(0) = -x - 4 (put in the input!)
f(0) = 0 - 4
f(0) = -4

Multiple Choice
f(6) = ________
x + 2
-x - 4
