Modality is the degree of realness in an image. A high-modality image is realistic and factual, while a low-modality image is less realistic.
For instance, the drawing of a city on the right has low modality. Low-modality images can better reflect hypotheses and potential futures.
Modality
Color symbolism refers to the emotions typically associated with color in a given culture. There can be symbolism associated with not only a color's hue but also its vibrancy.
For example, green colors tend to symbolize growth, freshness, hope, wealth, envy, and sickness. Faded colors may reflect something that happened in the past or something that no longer has importance. Very bright and bold colors may symbolize health, importance, and energy.

Perspective is how close the viewers feel to the objects and figures in an image. A closer view can make an image seem more realistic because it may mirror what a figure in the graphic novel would see.
A low angle can make a person or object seem larger and more powerful because the person or object seems larger. A high angle might make a person or object in the image look powerless because they can appear smaller in comparison to the background. Eye-level images can seem more realistic because that is the perspective with which you observe the world around you.
For example, the picture on the above is at a low angle. The woman looks larger and more powerful from this angle.
Perspective
Composition is how the objects and figures in an image are arranged. Graphic novels can use composition to draw readers' eyes to a specific panel or frame. They do this through their layout, background, size, and placement of items and figures. Visual artists use composition to control how their audience perceives their content.
For example: Look at the image below. It contains a figure using a smartphone on a pale blue background. The sparse composition highlights the importance of the figure and the phone.

The three panels are all drawn at an eye-level perspective that adds to the realism of the experience. The perspective helps readers feel like they are seeing what Kami and her aunt are seeing.
The panels that focus on the research are drawn from a closer perspective that provides a greater sense of connection.
The panels are drawn with low modality. They are obvious illustrations that do not look realistic. This matches the futuristic nature of the content.
The colors in the panels with the researcher are a little dull and primarily blue or natural earth colors. The faded colors connect to the concept that this is a hologram. Additionally, the faded colors contrast with Kami and Luna's bolder, more vibrant colors.
The composition of the overall page serves to demonstrate the equal importance of each of the three framed panels. They are the same size and directly underneath each other, providing a clear path for the reader's eyes to follow. The page with Kami, Luna, and the holographic researcher is the busiest panel. It shows the relationship between these elements before the next two panels focus on the researcher and their work with stem cells.
Each panel and frame of this page is overlain on a background image of a faded room. This helps remind readers that the characters are experiencing a hologram. They are not really speaking to a medical researcher or visiting the future. Instead, this should be viewed as a virtual reality experience.
