Discussion
What changes do you notice in your body when it gets hot outside?
What about when it gets cold outside?
What would happen if these things didn't occur?
3
Our bodies like balance
Our bodies are picky and have very specific ranges for things like our temperature, water levels, pH, and even blood sugars to be in. Being in this happy zone is called 'homeostasis'.
Homeostasis: The ability of the body to maintain a stable internal
environment despite changes in external conditions.
refers to the ability of the body to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions.

5
Multiple Choice
The narrator of the video mentioned some important factors our bodies like to keep balanced. Which of the options below did he NOT mention?
pH
Temperature
Glucose
Nutrition
6
Multiple Select
Our body is made up of lots of systems. What TWO systems did the narrator say help us to keep balanced?
Digestive
Nervous
Cardiovascular
Endocrine
Respiratory
7
Let's sum that up
Some key factors our body likes to keep balanced are pH, temperature, glucose (sugar), and electrolytes (salt).
The two main systems that work to maintain homeostasis are the nervous system and endocrine system.
8
What temperature do human bodies like being at?
What changes did we say happen when it's too hot/cold outside?
How could we draw this?
Let's go back to temperature
9
We just created a negative feedback loop!
Our body senses the balance is off and makes changes to do the opposite of what's wrong. For example, "I'm too hot. Let's do things to counteract the hot to make me cold."
Negative Feedback Loop: The action of restoring balance by reversing changes, happening continually back and forth.
10
The body’s action to restore balance.
Response:
A change in the environment that affects the body.
Stimulus:
Now go and label your drawings with the stimuli and responses.
11
Side note: Every lesson we do goes towards your grade. The more lessons you complete, the less likely a bad lesson or assessment will pull down your overall mark.
Let's find out.
12
Multiple Choice
What is homeostasis?
The process of rapid body growth
The maintenance of stable internal conditions
The body's ability to move quickly
The process of breaking down food
13
Multiple Choice
Which of these is an example of homeostasis?
Sweating when it's hot outside
Eating food when you're hungry
Running away from danger
Sleeping when you're tired
14
Multiple Choice
What is the purpose of a negative feedback loop?
To stop the body from reacting to changes
To reverse changes and restore balance
To increase the effects of a stimulus
To permanently change the body's conditions
15
Multiple Choice
Which of these is a stimulus in homeostasis?
Sweating to cool down
A rise in body temperature
Shivering to warm up
The production of hormones
