Evaleen Stein (1863–1923) was an artist and author from Lafayette, Indiana. Before becoming an author, she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where she perfected her illustrative skills. She was highly regarded for her illuminations—artistic embellishments to literary work. In addition to writing many popular children’s novels, Stein wrote several hundred poems, most of which were about the flora and fauna of Indiana. In this poem, Stein describes in lavish detail a small moment alongside the Kankakee river.
