Adjective Clauses

  • begin with a relative pronoun: that, which, who, whom, whose

  • modify nouns or pronouns

  • who (nominative case = use is subject)

  • whom (objective case = use can be DO, IO, OOP)

  • Commas are usually there to separate the subordinate clause, but not always mandatory

Adverb Clauses

  • begin with a subordinate conjunctions

  • modify verbs, adjective, or adverbs

  • the whole clause answers: where? when? how? to what extent? why?

  • common subordinate conjunctions: as long as, after, if, before, when, where, until, as soon as, although, even though, than, while

  • Commas are necessary when the subordinate clause begins the sentence.

Example of Adjective Clauses

  • The principal who retired last year was my former teacher.

  • The delinquents whom the police caught were sent to the detention center.

  • My essay that I shared with the class won the contest in December.

  • The pies which were picked up by the store owner were apple, blueberry, and cherry.

  • The player whose ankle was broken is out for the rest of the season.

Examples of Adverb Clauses

  • If you do not complete your homework, it will affect you grade in this class.

  • I will call you as soon as I get home.

  • When we go to the store, you need to pick out the flowers for the bouquet.

  • The boys' basketball team lost the championship game while the girls' team won their championship game.

  • Even though we are in a pandemic, the students will still make their confirmation.
