What is an Outline?

An outline is a general description or plan giving the essential features of something but not the details.

Why do we use an outline?

An outline is created to help the speaker plan and to guide the speaker during the course of the speech.

  • Identify your big idea (your thesis)

    • Identify ideas that support your thesis

      • Identify ideas that support those smaller ideas

  • Organize your ideas by category or by “big idea”

    • Write it out!

      • Use a notecard

      • Use pen

    • Use Roman Numerals (I, II, III, IV, V)

      • Then natural numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.)

        • Then letters (a, b, c, etc)

    • Introduction / Conclusion word for word

    • Key words and phrases for body

  • Wrap it up by summarizing what you are talking about and how it all comes together.
