Pay Equity

Pay equity is the practice of paying employees equally for work of similar value, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, or other protected status.

It means that employees’ demographic factors—do not influence their pay.

For example, a man completing the same job as a woman, should not be paid more money.

Pay equity is important because it ensures that employees with similar roles are paid equally, regardless of their personal characteristics.

It can help businesses comply with the law and improve employee morale.

Pay equity also leads to greater success in recruiting and retaining good employees.

Equal Pay Act

Pay equity is enforced by the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which is a federal law that prohibits employers from paying employees differently based on sex. 

  • Prohibits employers from paying employees less than employees of the opposite sex for the same work.

  • Covers all forms of compensation, including salary, overtime, bonuses, and benefits.

  • Requires employers to raise wages to equalize pay if there is an inequality between employees of different sexes.

Pay Fairness

Pay fairness ensures that employees believe they are being treated fairly and that their pay is free from bias, favoritism, or discrimination.

This means that even if there are pay differences among employees performing similar work, as long as differences are justified based on factors like experience, skills, or performance, the pay is considered fair.

Pay Fairness Example

If two employees within a company perform the same tasks and responsibilities of a secretary, they should receive the same salary.

If one secretary has a bachelors degree and the other one does not, it is considered fair for the one that has a degree to be paid more because it is based on factors related to experience, skills, or performance.

Equal Pay

Equal pay requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work.

The jobs do not need to be identical, but they must be substantially equal.

Equal Pay Example

For example, the jobs of a male engineer and a female marketing professional are not the same, but their contributions to your organization could be of a similar scale.

Do your male engineers receive a higher salary because their work is perceived to be more valuable? No.
