The layers of flesh help protect the developing seeds. The sweet taste attracts animals, such as deer, bears, and even humans, who then eat the fruit. The animals pass the seeds along with other food waste. Using this mechanism, plants get animals to spread their seeds for them. Seeds passed in animal waste will land far from the parent plant along with a packet of fertilizer. Hopefully, some of the seeds land in a location with a good habitat.
