The years following the Civil war the US economy became
increasingly industrial.

June 19, 1865
Union General Gordon
Granger arrived in Galveston
and issued an order which
read
“The people of Texas are
informed that in accordance
with a proclamation from the
Executive of the United States
all slaves are free”.

Juneteenth
Oldest known celebration of the end of
slavery in the U.S. After the Civil War
ended in 1865, most slaves were still
unaware of their freedom. When Union
troops began to enter Galveston, General
Granger read the order that the slaves
had been freed.
Freed slaves observed “Emancipation
Day” in 1866 to commemorate the
anniversary of their freedom. In 1979
this became a state holiday but is now
celebrated worldwide.

Black Codes
Black Codes restricted black people's right to own
property, conduct business, buy and lease land, and move
freely through public spaces.
Black people could be arrested for almost anything under
these laws.
Under these laws, life was not much better than it had
been while enslaved.

Sharecroppers
Sharecroppers were farm
workers. Landowners paid
for the tools, seed, animals &
housing. In exchange
sharecroppers worked the
land and gave half the value
of their crops to the
landowner.
Owners often controlled the
sharecroppers by selling them
supplies such as clothes & medicine.
Sharecroppers often went into debt.

and could sell crops at will and keep the profits
