Possessive Pronouns

Show ownership and often replaces a possessive noun or noun phrase. Possessive nouns use an apostrophe to show ownership (as in the team’s or Juan’s). But possessive pronouns do not use apostrophes.

Intensive and reflexive pronouns are formed by adding –self or –selves to certain personal and possessive pronouns.

A reflexive pronoun is used as the direct object, indirect object, or the object of the preposition of a sentence.

This means that the person or thing performing the action is also receiving the action.

  • Ex. We consider ourselves responsible enough to have a pet. (direct object)

  • Ex. They bought themselves a book on pet care. (indirect object)

  • Ex. Henry takes care of his pets by himself. (object of the preposition)

An intensive pronoun adds emphasis to a noun or pronoun already named.

  • Ex. I will do it myself.

  • Ex. He himself paid for the book.

Intensive and Reflexive Pronouns Apart?

Intensive pronouns

  • aren’t essential to a sentence’s basic meaning

  • remove them from the sentence and the sentence will still make sense.

  • Ex. Jake wrote that poem himself.

Reflexive pronouns

  • are essential to a sentence’s basic meaning

  • remove them from the sentence and the sentence will not make sense.

  • Ex. I helped myself to a bowl of soup

  • ​Who was helped to a bowl of soup? Myself needs to stay in the sentence.
