The phase of the Moon, also known as the lunar cycle, is how much of the Moon appears to us on Earth to be lit up by the sun. In space, exactly one-half of the moon is always lit up by the Sun.
However, the moon appears to change shape because only certain portions of its lit side are seen as it revolves around Earth.
Around once per month, every 29.53 days to be exact, the phases of the Moon make a complete revolution.
As the Moon circles the Earth, we can only see a portion of the lit-up side.
Why does the Moon appear to change shape from our perspective on Earth, even though exactly one-half of the Moon is always lit up by the Sun in space?
