​Adult citizens participate in the government by voting

​​Citizen rule

The idea or candidate that receives the most votes wins. The government makes sure no matter who wins, the smaller groups or identities are protected.

Equal treatment under the law for all people, including rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion

​An election where citizens have equal power and choice. This also mean citizens vote because they want to, not because they are afraid.

Free and fair elections

​Democracy requires action from its citizens; people must learn about politicans and laws so they can make informed votes. People must also participate in elected positions in the government.

​​​​Citizen participation

​People living in democracy must be willing to work together and give things up to help each other.

Now we will summarize the Great Law of Peace and ask ourselves if it is democratic or not.

1. The ruling council will be divided into three parts. The third group will listen to the discussions of the first two groups.

2. If there is a mistake, the third group will call attention to the mistake. When the first two groups decide and all agree with it, then the third group confirms the decision.
3. All five nation lords must come to an agreement.


How does the confederacy make decisions?

​1. If an important issue comes up, it will impact everyone in the Five Nations, and everyone is informed about it.
2. The decision of the people and of the chiefs council must agree.

- a women from every clan has a fire burning, and stays burning until a council meeting is called
- the women can bring important issues to the people before the council and their opinions are very valued

2. The five arrows represent a complete union. We have tied ourselves together in ove group, with one spirit and one soul. We will settle issues as one group. We will work and given advice to each other for the well-being of future generations.
