16
Tips for finding approximate heights
Find the vertical interval
Label the contour lines
approximate => usually ends with "0" or "5"m
If a point lies in the middle of two contour lines
=> vertical interval /2 + the lower heightIf a point is closer to a contour line, you can divide the space between the two contour lines into a few parts and estimate the height.

Is slope Y or slope Z steeper?
40
Steepness: (2) calculate the slope gradient
~ slope in Math but...
the answer is 1 in XX
What is the gradient here?
(比率)
41
Steps for finding slope gradient:
Please write all these steps in your work
1. Find vertical distance: higher point - lower point
2. Find horizontal distance:
measured distance on map x map scale
3. Gradient = vertical distance / horizontal distance
*****final answer must be: 1 in XX (no unit)
***round off your answer to 1 d.p. if necessary

46
Which slope has the largest gradient? The steepest?
The larger the gradient (1:1 > 1:40), the steeper the slope.

Cross-section
60
Cross-section
61
How to draw a cross-section:
Steps:
1. Draw a straight line between A and B.
2. Take a paper strip and mark down the intercepted points (contour lines, features, points A and B).
3. Draw a frame for the cross-section
(1cm vertical interval for the vertical axis; A-B horizontal distance for horizontal axis)
62
How to draw a cross-section:
Steps:
4. Put the paper strip along the horizontal axis of the frame. Mark the heights of the intercepted contour lines.
5. Join the points with a smooth curve.
6. Annotate any features along A-B.
7. Add a title of the cross-section and label the ends of A-B on horizontal axis.
63
5 key points to check in a cross-section!
1. Title
2. Label 2 ends of the section (e.g. A and B)
3. Vertical axis (correct interval + unit (m)!)
4. The line/ curve
5. Annotation/ label of features
(e.g. river, footpath, road)
