Electromagnetic Spectrum

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of all of the types of light waves.

What do you notice about the visible spectrum in the diagram below?

This is the part that you can see. It is "visible" to human beings.

Understanding waves

A wave is a pattern of motion that transfers energy from one place to another.

All electromagnetic waves carry energy.

The amount of energy that a wave carries depends on its wavelength.

A wavelength is the distance from the peak of one wave to the peak of the next.

Video take aways

  • The human eye cannot see the entire spectrum of light.

  • Light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that behaves like a wave and a particle.

  • We can only detect a range of colors based on energy.

  • Rods in our eyes measure brightness. Cones in our eyes detect color.

  • Microwaves are an example of a type of light that is invisible to the human eye.

  • The universe emits the full spectrum of light not just visible light.

  • We can use special instruments to see light not visible to our eyes, like radio or x-rays.

A wavelength is the length of one wave. There are three ways to measure wavelength.

The amount of energy a wave carries depends on its wavelength

  • Short wavelengths have high energy.

  • Visible light wavelengths are in between and have medium energy.

  • Long wavelengths have low energy.
